Job Description

Seeking a graduate intern to work with researchers in NREL’s Center for Integrated Mobility Sciences on research and development of Augmented Reality technologies for mobility systems.

Specific tasks may include:

• Assist in developing Augmented Reality applications for mobility systems.
• Assist in V2X communication for Augmented Reality and other mobility systems applications.
• Research and data gathering on sensors and operating specifications – such a LiDAR, RADAR, stereo imaging, acoustic, and video.
• Contact sensor manufacturers for additional data and collaboration
• Design test instrumentation and test sensors in laboratories
• Develop/implement sensor interface, gather data, and interface with computer programmers for data acquisition.
• Evaluate, design, and implement state-of-the-art sensor fusion algorithms to rigorously integrate data from multiple sensors.
• Apply all above skills to a specific project aimed at discerning objects through vegetation.
• Support key external collaborations, such as NREL’s Small Business Vouchers, specifically R&D to support use of automation for solar-powered, automated lawn maintenance equipment.
• Potential exposure to and support of additional research activities that may be identified.

Basic QualificationsMinimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.

Undergraduate: Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a bachelor’s degree program from an accredited institution.
Post Undergraduate: Earned a bachelor’s degree within the past 12 months. Eligible for an internship period of up to one year.

Graduate: Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a master’s degree program from an accredited institution.
Post Graduate: Earned a master’s degree within the past 12 months. Eligible for an internship period of up to one year.
Graduate + PhD: Completed master’s degree and enrolled as PhD student from an accredited institution.

Additional Required Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in a PhD program
• Augmented reality experience
• Experience with mobility systems

Preferred Qualifications

Desirable qualifications include:

• Strong electrical / computer engineering skills
• Knowledge of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and statistics
• Demonstrated ability in micro-controller design and programming
• Experience with data collection with spatial sensors
• Expertise in Python programming
• Experience with the Robot Operating System (ROS) and Gazebo robot simulator

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)Job Profile: / Annual Salary Range: $43,700 - $69,900
