ABOUT THIS POSITION
Waystar, the leading Healthcare Revenue Cycle Management (RCM) technology company, is seeking an accomplished Principal Engineer to lead the technical strategy and execution of our Data Licensing and Resale product offerings. In this highly visible individual contributor role, you will architect and optimize scalable, secure data solutions that deliver high-value licensed data products and insights to customers.WHAT YOU'LL DO
Technical Architecture & Leadership
- Lead the end-to-end technical design of data licensing infrastructure and customer-facing data products.
- Define and enforce best practices for data modeling, pipeline architecture, and performance tuning on cloud platforms (Snowflake, BigQuery).
- Serve as the technical authority for data delivery infrastructure, collaborating with engineering, product, and compliance teams.
- Drive architectural decisions around scalability, security, and maintainability to support growing customer demand and data volume.
Enterprise Data Engineering
- Design, build, and optimize robust, production-grade pipelines to support batch and near real-time delivery of licensed datasets.
- Implement secure data-sharing frameworks with strict governance, privacy, and de-identification requirements (HIPAA-compliant).
- Oversee the integration of data from heterogeneous systems (SQL Server, Postgres, APIs) and ensure semantic consistency.
- Champion quality through monitoring, alerting, and validation systems that support reliable external data delivery.
Strategic Data Product Enablement
- Partner with product, legal, and go-to-market teams to translate licensing agreements and customer expectations into executable technical specifications.
- Lead the creation of scalable, customer-centric data access models—supporting scheduled, on-demand, and API-based delivery patterns.
- Architect anonymization strategies to support compliant data monetization while preserving analytical value.
Performance Optimization & Automation
- Drive automation of data delivery pipelines using Python, SQL, dbt, and orchestration tools like Airflow.
- Apply advanced optimization techniques including Snowflake partitioning, clustering, and materialized views to minimize cost and latency.
- Identify and address systemic performance bottlenecks through benchmarking and telemetry-based insights.
Technical Mentorship & Thought Leadership
- Provide technical mentorship to data engineers and influence engineering standards across the organization.
- Contribute to data architecture forums and cross-functional planning efforts for shared platforms and enterprise data capabilities.
- Stay current with emerging technologies and assess their relevance to licensed data and commercial analytics initiatives.
WHAT YOU'LL NEED
Required:
- Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related technical field.
- 8+ years of experience in data engineering, including cloud-based architecture and external-facing data products.
- Deep hands-on experience with Snowflake, BigQuery, SQL Server, Postgres, Python, and data pipeline orchestration tools.
- Proven ability to design secure, scalable data systems for external data delivery and monetization.
- Strong understanding of data licensing, governance, privacy (e.g., HIPAA), and de-identification techniques.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills; able to influence both technical and business audiences.
Preferred:
- Experience in healthcare data and familiarity with revenue cycle processes.
- Demonstrated experience building customer-facing data products or APIs.
- Thought leadership in data architecture or engineering communities.
- Track record of delivering high-impact, data-driven products that achieve measurable business outcomes.
